Steve Burtch
Steve Burtch is known for his minimalist, white paintings made on square acrylic panels. Each work is the result of layered applications of graphite, Mylar, and paint to achieve a variety of surface textures within a narrow tonal and color range; the paintings’ differing surfaces catch and reflect light in such a way as to illuminate different portions of the composition as a viewer walks by. Burtch, who was trained in studio painting, draws inspiration from the Light and Space movement. His personal maxim for working is “You just have to get out of the way,”a phrase borrowed from film director David Lynch, who in turn borrowed it from Hungarian ceramicist Eva Zeisel.
